History of the Independence of Antioquia

The Independence Day of Antioquia happens on August 11, 1813 , when Don Juan del Corral, colonel and judge, with dictator powers, signed the Act of Independence in which it stated that by the will of the people, the absolute emancipation of the Kingdom of Spain.

However, the liberation of the Province of Antioquia came unequivocally on August 28, 1819, when Lieutenant Colonel José María Córdova arrived in Rionegro as governor and began to exercise his political and military position.

This was the result of the Combat of Chorros Blancos on February 12, 1820, in the North of Antioquia, specifically on the road that joins the municipalities of Angostura, Campamento and Yarumal. At that time, Lieutenant Colonel José María Córdova and his army defeated the royalist troops under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Francisco Wartela, who fled under the cover of the darkness of the night towards the Magdalena River.

This event not only ratified the Independence of Antioquia but also helped to consolidate the Independence of Colombia, after the Spanish reconquest.
