What is the National Day for the Dignity of Women Victims of Sexual Violence?

Every May 25, the National Day for the Dignity of Women Victims of Sexual Violence in the Framework of the Armed Conflict is celebrated; an emblematic date established as a measure of reparation with collective impact for all women who suffered sexual violence during the armed conflict between the Government and the guerrillas.

Why is the National Day for the Dignity of Women Victims of Sexual Violence important?

The National Day for the Dignity of Women Victims of Sexual Violence in the Framework of the Armed Conflict is a special and important day because to date more than 32,092 victims of “crimes against freedom and sexual integrity” have been registered. Of all those victims, 91% are women, that is, a little more than 29,189.

The collective memory that has been built on the testimonies of thousands of women, young people, boys and girls victims of sexual violence in the context of the armed conflict is a call to recognize the seriousness of this crime, but also to clarify , those responsible are investigated, punished and the victims repaired.

The National Day for the Dignity of Women Victims of Sexual Violence is not only a dignifying date, but also a call to generate structural conditions of social transformation with the objective that priority be given to the dignified life of all women and such events are prevented from reoccurring.
