Guava sandwich or sweet - Original recipe

Guava candy, also known as bocadillo, is one of the most emblematic and delicious desserts of Colombian gastronomy. Its sweet flavor and smooth texture make it an irresistible temptation for lovers of tropical flavors.

Guava, the Star Fruit

Guava is a tropical fruit native to Latin America that is characterized by its sweet and mild aroma and flavor. Colombia is one of the main guava producers in the world, which makes guava candy a traditional and very popular dessert in the country.

Ingredients needed

To make guava candy, you will need:

Guava Preparation

  1. Wash the guavas and cut them into small pieces, removing the seeds. If you prefer a guava sweet with a more intense flavor, you can leave the seeds.
  2. Place the guava pieces in a large pot and add enough water to cover them. Add the lemon juice and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  3. Once the guavas are soft, add the sugar to the pot and mix well. The amount of sugar will depend on your personal preference and the level of sweetness of the guavas. You can start with about 1 cup of sugar and adjust as needed.
  4. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook the mixture over low heat, stirring occasionally to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pot. The mixture should thicken and acquire a consistency similar to jam.
  5. If you want to give it an extra touch of flavor, you can add a pinch of cinnamon powder to the mixture while it simmers.
  6. Once the mixture has thickened and acquired the desired texture, remove it from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes. Then, pour the mixture into a mold previously greased with oil or butter, so that it is easier to unmold later.
  7. Leave the guava candy in the mold at room temperature to cool and take shape. You can refrigerate it for a few hours to make it firmer and easier to cut.
  8. Once the guava candy is completely cold and firm, take it out of the mold and cut it into small squares or strips. Serve and enjoy this delicious and traditional Colombian treat.

Guava candy, known as bocadillo in Colombia , is a delicacy that reflects the richness of tropical gastronomy. With simple ingredients and easy steps, you can create this traditional treat at home that combines the sweetness of guavas with the unique flavor of sugar and, optionally, cinnamon. Enjoy guava candy as a dessert, snack or gift to share with your loved ones, and let yourself be captivated by its exquisite flavor and its cultural roots in Colombian cuisine.
