May 17 was promoted by the Association of Internet Users of Spain as the date to celebrate Internet Day. This day is celebrated in Mexico, Peru, Chile, Paraguay, Argentina, Spain, Colombia, Uruguay and Ecuador among others.
Why did you get the idea to celebrate this date?
The initiative was raised by the Association of Internet Users, with the aim of extending to all citizens the achievements and importance of Information and Communication Technologies (commonly abbreviated ICTs).
It was held for the first time on May 17, 2005. Shortly afterwards, in November 2005, the Information Society Summit was held in Tunis, where they proposed to the UN to officially establish this date on the calendar. It is also known today as the “World Telecommunications and Information Society Day”.
This date found good reception in Latin America, so that it allowed interregional links between the Associations of Internet Users of Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador and Mexico, among others.
How do the different countries of the region celebrate the date?
In Colombia during the Internet day, the knowledge and use of Information and Communication Technologies is promoted and the diffusion of the Internet within the country is encouraged.
In Argentina, virtual and face-to-face conferences are organized to invite specialists and professionals to open debates on new topics in the area.
Meanwhile, in Chile, an event is organized through the Internet, where a Congress is held and prizes are awarded to recognized projects (among them, the campaign Let's talk about the same e-language, the Coordinating Unit of the society of the information and Cine Geek cycles, among others).
Why is it important to promote this date?
The day of the Internet seeks to discuss and innovate in terms of virtual insertion to different people. Since, nowadays, Internet access has become an important work and learning tool for everyone.
The ultimate goal of this date is to recognize the importance of the Internet as a global resource that must be within the true reach of the general public. Access favors the fulfillment of other fundamental rights, such as the right to expression, the right to education and the right to work.
In addition, it seeks to recognize the effort of both people and institutions that are responsible for helping citizens to bridge the digital divide and build the new Information Society that is the Internet.
