Why is the Day of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá celebrated?

The Day of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá is celebrated on July 9 because on this day but in the year 1829, Pope Pius VII proclaims the Virgin of Chiquinquirá as the patron saint of Colombia . Then, in 1919, this virgin was canonically crowned by Pope Pius X after he signed the decree.

The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá was declared a Basilica in 1927 by Pope Pius XI, which is visited every year by thousands of tourists and faithful, especially in the framework of the festivities of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá.

In the basilica located in the city of Bogotá, is the painting of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá , which is guarded by the Dominicans. This canvas belongs to the oldest Colombian colonial art, and it is a cotton blanket of a little more than one meter, in a frame with plates of the national shield, the dioceses of the country and the Dominican fathers.
