December 2023 Calendar - Colombia

The month of December in Colombia is filled with vibrant celebrations and cultural events that reflect the rich diversity of this South American country. From religious festivities to local traditions, December offers Colombians and visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the magic and joy of the Christmas season.

The Novena of Christmas Bonuses (December 16 to 24)

The Novena de Aguinaldos is one of the most deeply rooted and beloved traditions in Colombia during the Christmas season. It is celebrated for nine days, from December 16 to 24, and marks the beginning of Christmas festivities in the country.

This tradition has its origins in colonial times, when missionaries brought by the Spanish taught the indigenous people about the birth of Jesus and the importance of Christmas. Over time, the Novena de Aguinaldos became a popular practice and was passed down from generation to generation.

During the Novena , families and communities gather in their homes or in churches to pray and sing Christmas carols in honor of the birth of Jesus. Each night, a specific prayer is recited and a biblical passage is read that tells the story of Christ's birth. In addition to prayers and songs, festive activities are also carried out, such as sharing food and drinks typical of the Christmas season. The most common dishes during the Novena include natilla (a sweet cream dessert), buñuelos (fried balls of corn and cheese dough), and tamales (dough stuffed with meat and wrapped in banana leaves).

The Novena de Aguinaldos is an opportunity for families to get together and strengthen their affective ties. It is a time to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and to transmit values of solidarity, generosity and love towards others.

The Cali Fair (December 25 to 30)

The Cali Fair is one of the most important and expected festivities in Colombia. It is celebrated annually from December 25 to 30 in the city of Cali, the capital of the department of Valle del Cauca. This fair is an expression of the rich culture, music and dance of the Colombian Pacific region. During these six days, the city is filled with joy and festive activities that attract both locals and tourists.

The Cali Fair includes a wide variety of events and activities, such as salsa parades, dance competitions, live music shows, and artistic exhibitions. Locals and visitors enjoy typical gastronomy, including dishes such as sancocho de gallina and aborrajado. One of the highlights of the fair is the Salsódromo, a salsa parade in which hundreds of dancers take to the streets with elaborate choreography, showcasing the passion and talent of Cali people for dancing. In addition to cultural and musical activities, the Cali Fair also includes sporting events, craft fairs, and folkloric shows that celebrate Colombia's cultural diversity.

The Feast of the Little Candles (December 7)

On December 7, Colombians celebrate the Fiesta de las Velitas, a tradition that marks the start of the Christmas season in the country. On this date, the streets and homes are illuminated with candles, lanterns, and festive lights to commemorate the Immaculate Conception and welcome Christmas.

It is common for families and communities to come together to light candles and share a festive dinner. The Fiesta de las Velitas creates a magical and warm atmosphere throughout Colombia, and is one of the most beloved festivities for Colombians of all ages.

Christmas Eve and Christmas (December 24-25)

As in many other countries, Christmas Eve and Christmas are special celebrations in Colombia. Families gather for Misa de Gallo on Christmas Eve, followed by a festive dinner that includes traditional dishes such as roast suckling pig, ajiaco (a thick chicken and potato soup), and natilla (a sweet cream dessert).

The streets and homes are adorned with lights, Christmas decorations and nativity scenes, creating a festive and spiritual atmosphere. Christmas is an opportunity to share special moments with the family and to express gratitude and love towards others.

The festive spirit, music, dance and hospitality characterize these celebrations, creating an atmosphere of joy and unity throughout the country. December in Colombia is a magical and long-awaited season, full of moving traditions and unforgettable moments to share with loved ones and friends.
